Undergraduate Program in Art History

The Department of Art History is located in the South Campus in Göztepe and actively offers a 4-year undergraduate program in art history. The language of instruction is Turkish. Throughout the program training, the material cultural assets produced in the Turkish and Islamic cultural area are studied and taught in a chronological order. Education curriculum is based on Turkish-Islamic Art and Archeology. In the courses, architectural works and architectural ornamentation, handicrafts, miniatures, painting and sculpture art are introduced in a systematic manner. The main vocational information such as theories of art, terminology, technical drawing-survey, research methods, archaeological excavation techniques in art history and restoration-conservation are explained. The program also aims to help the students gain practical experience by participating in archeological excavations, conservation and restoration works related to the area.

Students who successfully complete the Undergraduate Program in Art History are entitled to receive the title “Art Historian”. With this title they can work in museums, art galleries, as researchers and experts in archaeological excavations and surface surveys, as specialists in the restoration works and as academicians in universities.

Undergraduate Programs in History (Turkish and English)

The Department of History is located in the South Campus in Göztepe and is actively conducting two 4-year undergraduate programs in history, offering education in %100 Turkish and %100 English languages in two separate programs. The department primarily aims for an education integrated with the world with the help of national and international partnerships such as Farabi and Erasmus Programs in addition to a mandatory English Preparatory Class, minor and double majors in the other available programs of the faculty. Furnishing the alumni with the knowledge of history, as well as the ability to read texts in at least one western and one eastern language and the ability to conduct research and textualize the results of research are among the other aims of the department.

The alumni graduating from the History Department of Istanbul Medeniyet University acquires the title “historian” and are able to conduct historical research. They may further their studies by continuing MA / PhD programs to become an academician or take part in private education institutions. By means of free certificate programs, our students may also find job opportunities in archives, museums or in tourism sector, in press or visual media which requires historical knowledge.

Undergraduate Program in History of Science

The History of Science Department is located in the South Campus in Göztepe and actively offers a 4-year undergraduate program in the history of science. The language of instruction in the program is Turkish. The History of Science Department considers ‘science’ to be an organized system of knowledge developed by humanity to better understand the universe/nature. It aims to research, in various civilizations and cultures, the history of this understanding and in addition to the system itself, the system’s relation to the historical context in which it is produced, to other human activities such as religion, philosophy and art. While using contemporary research techniques, the individual and social counterparts of these relations are also taken into consideration.

The students are given the necessary background support in learning classical languages and the technical content of the discipline in basic and formal sciences in which they are expected to research. The aims of the department are to contribute to the preservation of heritage of science and technology in Turkey and to prepare students as teacher candidates who can teach history of science in secondary education.

Undergraduate Program in Information and Document Management

The Department of Information and Document Management is located in the South Campus in Göztepe and actively offers a 4-year undergraduate program in information and document management. The language of instruction in the program is Turkish. The Department aims to train the librarians and archive specialists of the future.

The program provides education and training on topics such as providing, organizing and using information; information institutions and services; information literacy; information and communication technologies; information institutions management; professional development and ethics. The program curriculum ensures a strong foundation for both theory and practice in the field of library and information science.

Undergraduate Program in Philosophy

The Philosophy Department is located in the South Campus in Göztepe and actively offers a 4-year undergraduate program in philosophy. The language of instruction in the program is Turkish. Assuming philosophy to be a certain sensibility belonging to the human being among others including religious, scientific and aesthetic sensibilities, the Philosophy Department tries to understand and philosophize in a systematical, analytical and historical manner by taking account of the features of the local and the universal within a philosophical perspective.

The studies in the Department are carried on under 5 branches: History of Turkish Philosophy, Islamic Philosophy, History of Philosophy, Logic and Systematical Philosophy. These branches focus on the main philosophical topics as Turkish Philosophy and Thought, Islamic Philosophy, History of Science, Philosophy of Science, Classical, Modern and Contemporary Logic, Ontology, Epistemology and Axiology and the important periods and processes of History of Philosophy.

Undergraduate Program in Psychology

The Psychology Department is located in the South Campus in Göztepe and actively offers a 4-year undergraduate program in psychology. The language of instruction in the program is Turkish. The department aims to help undergraduate students acquire basic knowledge in all areas of psychology, including clinical, developmental, social, cognitive, neuropsychology, statistics and industry.

Students in the psychology department are trained according to the “scientist-practitioner” model. In other words, it is aimed that our students gain the skills to be both academics and practitioners. In this way, alumni of the program will have the knowledge and skills to conduct research at an international level and to work effectively in applied fields.

Undergraduate Program in Sociology

The Sociology Department is located in the South Campus in Göztepe and actively offers a 4-year undergraduate program in sociology. The language of instruction in the program is Turkish. The main objective of Department of Sociology at İstanbul Medeniyet University is to comprehend and interpret the social actions, concepts and experiences in Turkey and all around the world. With a particular focus on social change and transformation, social interaction, as well as on social movements, the department aims to develop a multi-dimensional perspective on various social issues. The analysis of migration movements and bureaucratic structures are among the main areas of study which also contribute to a further interest in urbanization patterns and political economy of development from a macro-sociological point of view. Moreover, the analysis of components of culture throughout a comprehensive examination of social institutions such as family, education and religion, is highly emphasized with a particular interest in social interactions from a micro-sociological point of view. The Department of Sociology at İstanbul Medeniyet University therefore seeks to train competent sociologists who have comprehensive knowledge of sociological theories and are well-equipped in the usage and application of sociological research methods.

Undergraduate Program in Turkish Language and Literature

The Department of Turkish Language and Literature is located in the South Campus in Göztepe and actively offers a 4-year undergraduate program in Turkish language and literature. The language of instruction in the program is Turkish.

Throughout the program, almost all subjects of Turkish language and literature such as events, concepts, literary genres and persons are discussed by using scientific methods, modern theories and approaches. The undergraduate program offers a curriculum involving the five main branches of Turkish language and literature, which are Old Turkic Language, Modern Turkish Language, Classical Turkish Literature, Modern Turkish Literature, and Turkish Folk Literature.

Undergraduate Program in Spanish Language and Literature

The Department of Spanish Language and Literature is located in the South Campus in Göztepe and actively offers a one-year preparatory training in Spanish which is compulsory and a 4-year undergraduate program in Spanish language and literature. The language of instruction in the program is 70% Spanish and 30% Turkish. If admitted, students who are proficient in Spanish can document their knowledge of Spanish at B1 level; in this way they can start their studies in the first year of the undergraduate program.

The program curriculum ensures that Spanish language and the literature, culture and histories of Spain and Latin American countries are taught in the most effective way from past to the present. With its academic meticulousness and diverse critical and theoretical approaches toward Spanish and Latin American literatures, the department carries out research and activities that will carry it to the highest levels in the field. Thus, it aims to train competent individuals with a broad vision and the ability to improve the intercultural relations between Spanish-speaking countries, Spain and Turkey who also have the awareness to contribute to Turkey’s development and can generate modern methods and ideas.
